IT Cosmetics closes China e-commerce channel

The high-gloss world of prestige beauty is undergoing a significant shift, as a major international player makes a strategic retreat from one of the world’s most dynamic markets. IT Cosmetics, the L’Oréal-owned brand, is effectively exiting China’s official online retail landscape.

This departure is formalized with the closure of its Tmall Global flagship store, which served as the brand’s sole online purchasing channel in the country. Operations for this channel are scheduled to cease on September 2, 2026.

The move follows a broader pattern of reduced local engagement. The brand had already scaled back its activity across key Chinese social media platforms, including WeChat, Weibo, and Xiaohongshu, with those updates concluding by early 2025.

This decision is particularly telling when viewed against the backdrop of IT Cosmetics’ massive success in the United States. The brand built its empire on dermatologically developed makeup for problem skin, solidifying its position as a leader in key US complexion categories. It is a remarkable trajectory, especially considering L’Oréal acquired the company for $1.2 billion back in 2016.

However, the retreat from the Chinese market highlights a stark reality for international prestige beauty brands: global credentials alone do not guarantee sustained relevance in the highly competitive Chinese beauty landscape.

The closure underscores the profound challenge of translating strong Western market positions into deep, lasting growth within China. It suggests that while global recognition is valuable, navigating the nuances of local consumer expectations and market demands requires a level of localized strategy that, in this instance, proved unattainable.

Ultimately, the situation demonstrates that even deeply established global entities must adapt their approach to thrive, proving that success in the global beauty sphere requires more than just a successful acquisition; it demands authentic, localized market immersion.
