South Korea cracks down on counterfeit K-Beauty
K-Beauty Goes Global: South Korea Launches Trademark Shield Against Counterfeits
As K-beauty experiences its meteoric rise on the global stage, a shadow looms over the thriving market: the proliferation of counterfeit cosmetics. High-quality Korean beauty brands are increasingly competing in international digital marketplaces, but protecting their intellectual property has never been more critical. In response to this challenge, the South Korean government is deploying a sophisticated, state-backed system designed to safeguard K-beauty trademarks worldwide.
This ambitious initiative marks a significant shift from passive monitoring to active enforcement. Starting in October, the government will register certified trademarks across more than 70 countries and markets, encompassing major regions like Europe, China, and ASEAN. This framework establishes a coordinated mechanism, empowering Korean authorities to initiate investigations, administrative searches, and customs interventions whenever counterfeit, certified products are identified.
The strategy isn’t just about tracking; it’s about proactive defense. It works hand-in-hand with advanced technology. Authorities are leveraging AI-powered monitoring of global e-commerce platforms, which has already proven effective in major crackdowns. In 2025 alone, this system helped authorities remove more than 36,000 counterfeit beauty products, and the effort is set to continue, targeting another 20,000 items during the first half of 2026.
To ensure comprehensive coverage in the digital sphere, cooperation has expanded dramatically. The government has deepened formal partnerships with e-commerce platforms, increasing its engagement from six to nine key players, including giants like TikTok Shop, Temu, and Tokopedia. This collaborative approach ensures that enforcement can effectively reach consumers wherever they shop.
The necessity of these measures stems from a clear understanding of the stakes involved. When high-quality K-beauty products are copied, it does more than just create cheap imitations; it erodes consumer confidence, undermines brand equity, and poses serious risks to product safety. For Korean beauty companies that are scaling their operations across global digital arenas, coordinated international enforcement is no longer optional—it is essential.
By establishing this robust legal and technological shield, South Korea is ensuring that the authenticity, quality, and reputation of K-beauty remain intact as it continues its exciting journey across the world. This proactive stance positions the industry to flourish, knowing that their hard-earned brand value is protected by a global framework.
