Shiseido profit surges despite softer sales in H1 2026
When the numbers land, they often tell a story far more interesting than the headlines. For Shiseido, the first half of 2026 painted a picture of remarkable resilience, proving that even when market conditions fluctuate, strategic management can unlock significant profitability.
Despite a slight tempering in overall sales figures, the company reported a powerful surge in core operating profit, jumping an impressive 90.1% year-on-year to ¥44.4 billion. This robust growth suggests that Shiseido navigated the complexities of the beauty landscape with skill and precision.
The scale of the improvement was truly staggering when looking at specific segments. Core operating profit more than doubled during the six months ended June 30th, hitting ¥41.9 billion. Furthermore, profit attributable to owners of the parent company soared by 211.4%, reaching ¥29.7 billion.
While overall reported net sales increased by 6.2% to ¥499.0 billion, like-for-like sales saw a modest dip of just 0.2%. This dichotomy highlights that the strategic focus shifted from purely volume to maximizing efficiency and profitability.
Regional performance provided a more nuanced view of this global success. In China and the Travel Retail sector, reported sales climbed by 10%, though like-for-like figures experienced a slight dip of 0.1%. Crucially, core operating profit in this area grew by 22.7% to ¥47.6 billion, demonstrating successful management within a dynamic market.
The rest of the world presented a mixed picture. The Asia Pacific region managed solid growth, expanding by 2.1% like-for-like. However, other areas saw slight softening; Japan, the Americas, and EMEA recorded minor like-for-like declines of 0.4%, 0.9%, and 1.2%, respectively.
Despite these regional variations, the boost in profitability was most notable in the Americas, where core operating profit successfully returned to positive territory. This success, coupled with the steady growth across Asia Pacific, clearly strengthened Shiseido’s global cosmetics business.
Looking ahead, the company remains confidently on track, maintaining its full-year 2026 forecast of ¥990 billion in net sales and ¥69 billion in core operating profit. These results underscore a successful pivot: demonstrating that strong underlying operational performance can indeed triumph over modest sales fluctuations.
