Kohl’s raises 2026 outlook despite sales drop

Kohl’s Finds the Sweet Spot: Margin Gains Signal Confidence in Retail Turnaround

In a move that signals renewed confidence in its strategic path, Kohl’s has upgraded its full-year financial outlook for 2026. This positive shift comes despite a challenging retail environment, as the company reported improved profit margins in the second quarter, even while net and comparable sales experienced a slight year-on-year decline.

The underlying strength was clearly visible in the profitability metrics. During the second quarter, the retailer achieved a gross margin of 43 percent, marking a significant increase of 305 basis points. This improvement highlights the effectiveness of the company’s operational management and its ability to navigate cost pressures.

Kohl’s net income reached US$151 million for the quarter, translating to US$1.28 per diluted share. This strong bottom line was partially bolstered by external factors, including the receipt of approximately US$150 million in tariff refunds during the period, with roughly US$100 million of that benefit directly contributing to the enhanced gross margin.

While the margin story is compelling, the sales figures provided a balanced picture. Net sales for the quarter were US$3.3 billion, which saw a modest decline of 0.9 percent compared to the previous year. This tells a full story: while internal efficiencies are paying off, the broader retail landscape still presents headwinds for topline growth.

Looking ahead, the revised outlook reflects an optimistic view of the company’s turnaround strategy and its position on the balance sheet. Kohl’s now anticipates that full-year net and comparable sales will range from a slight 1.5 percent decline to flat.

Furthermore, the company is signaling a commitment to shareholder value by restarting share repurchases, with plans to invest up to US$100 million in the 2026 fiscal year. This indicates a confidence that the improved operational performance is sustainable.

Ultimately, the latest financial results underscore the fact that even in a challenging retail market, smart management and a focused turnaround strategy can yield tangible improvements in profitability. The story of Kohl’s is one of resilience—a reminder that while the road to sustainable growth requires continued effort, clear operational wins can certainly brighten the outlook.
