Kao expands Curél into Nordic markets

The Japanese cosmetics giant Kao is poised for a significant expansion across the Nordic region, bringing its popular Curél sensitive skincare brand to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. This move is a strategic play aimed at solidifying Kao’s position in the European cosmetics market as part of a larger global growth initiative.

This latest rollout highlights Kao’s successful strategy of scaling select Japanese beauty brands internationally. By focusing on established specialist retail partners, the company is effectively bridging the gap between its acclaimed products and key consumer markets, demonstrating a keen understanding of regional beauty landscapes.

The expansion into the Nordic countries is scheduled to begin in September 2026, where Curél will be exclusively available through leading beauty retailers KICKS and Matas. This focused approach allows the brand to establish a strong foothold by leveraging trusted distribution channels in these sophisticated markets.

The Nordic expansion is part of a broader, ambitious global strategy. Curél is one of six focus brands within Kao’s Global Sharp Top strategy, underscoring its importance within the company’s overall portfolio. The strategic focus on Europe is clear: positioning the cosmetics portfolio as a priority area for accelerated growth.

The company’s expansion efforts are part of a sustained commitment to international growth. Previous expansions include the UK in 2019, Germany and France in 2025, and the Netherlands in May 2026, illustrating a consistent, methodical approach to market penetration.

Looking ahead, Kao is setting ambitious sales targets. The goal is to increase sales to 1.6 times 2024 levels by 2030. This target is supported by the fact that overseas markets currently account for approximately 50 percent of the company’s total sales, signaling that international performance is a cornerstone of the overall business success.
