Indonesia drives cosmetics export growth

Indonesia’s Beauty Boom: How Local Cosmetics Are Ready to Conquer Global Markets

Indonesia is not just a vast archipelago brimming with natural beauty; it is rapidly emerging as a powerhouse in the global cosmetics industry. Driven by a strategic push from the government, the nation is transforming its domestic manufacturing base into a dynamic export engine, ready to share its rich beauty traditions with the world.

The momentum is real. In 2025, Indonesian cosmetics exports soared to US$473.8 million, marking a significant 13.7 percent increase from the previous year. This growth signals that local innovation is moving beyond domestic borders, positioning Indonesian beauty products firmly on the international stage.

At the heart of this expansion is a thriving ecosystem of local producers. As of July 2026, the cosmetics industry in Indonesia encompasses 1,655 players. Crucially, the vast majority of these enterprises—over 87 percent—are classified as small and medium-sized businesses, underscoring the enormous potential held by local entrepreneurs.

To unlock this potential, the Ministry of Industry is actively stepping up support for these small and medium-sized manufacturers. The strategy is clear: to bolster the quality, enhance the innovation, expand production capacity, and improve market access for Indonesian beauty products worldwide.

This focus is designed to turn the domestic manufacturing base into a formidable export industry, empowering local brands to compete successfully in neighboring and wider international markets. It’s an effort to ensure that the creativity flourishing within Indonesia finds its rightful place on the global stage.

The pipeline of products is equally impressive. By August, more than 370,000 cosmetic products had been officially registered, illustrating the sheer volume and diversity of the local creative output.

Success stories are already unfolding. Local manufacturers are finding success by exporting specialized goods, such as perfume and hair gel products, demonstrating the viability of Indonesian craftsmanship. For example, local companies like PT Follow Me Indonesia are already successfully navigating international trade, shipping their products to markets like Papua New Guinea.

This push represents more than just a trade statistic; it is a narrative of local empowerment. By focusing on quality and global competitiveness, Indonesia is cultivating a future where its vibrant cosmetic industry is a leading force in world beauty and personal care.
