India sets labelling rules for vegetarian and non-veg cosmetics
India Mandates Clear Labeling for Cosmetics and Toiletries
A significant shift in consumer transparency has arrived in India, as the government has introduced new mandatory labeling rules for cosmetics and toiletry products. This sweeping change affects common items like soaps, shampoos, and toothpaste, demanding that manufacturers clearly identify the origin of their products.
The new regulations, established by India’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs, aim to empower consumers with more information about the ingredients and origin of the personal care items they purchase. This move solidifies a new standard for transparency across the personal care industry.
The core of the new system involves a simple, yet crucial, marking process. Products must now display a specific indicator showing whether they are of vegetarian or non-vegetarian origin. For products derived from vegetarian sources, a green dot must be displayed, while those of non-vegetarian origin must carry a red or brown dot.
To ensure this information is immediately visible and impossible to miss, the marking must be positioned prominently at the top of the principal display panel on the packaging. This requirement ensures that consumers can quickly assess the product’s classification before making a purchase.
This initiative introduces a new compliance layer for all cosmetics and personal care manufacturers and brands operating in the Indian market. Affected companies are now required to thoroughly review their product classifications and packaging designs to align with these updated labeling standards.
The goal of these rules is to foster greater accountability and eliminate ambiguity regarding product sourcing. By enforcing clear, standardized markings, the regulation seeks to build a more trustworthy and informed market environment for personal care goods in India.
