Princess Diana has cemented her legacy through countless public appearances, but perhaps few moments have sparked as much fascination as the evolution of her iconic hair. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Diana was synonymous with a rebellious, effortlessly chic aesthetic, famously sporting a shaggy, effortlessly tousled ‘do that defined a generation.

Yet, even within the world of royal glamour, there were moments where personal style intersected dramatically with protocol. One such moment occurred in 1984, during the State Opening of Parliament, when Diana decided to experiment with a dramatically different look.

For this high-profile event alongside Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, Diana opted for a swept-back updo, a bold choice that caught the attention of everyone watching. Her look was further accentuated by the choice of accessories, as she wore the Spencer family’s diamond tiara, a style she had previously sported on her wedding day.

The transformation was meticulous. Her hair stylist, Richard Dalton, worked to shape Diana’s locks into a sophisticated ‘chignon’—a bun pinned at the nape of the neck, a style reminiscent of movie stars from a generation earlier. When Diana emerged from her carriage, the public was immediately captivated, reacting with gasps of admiration at the change.

The reaction, however, was not entirely seamless. While the public adored the visual spectacle, some members of the Royal family found the scene-stealing moment quite something else. Her brother, Charles Spencer, reflected on the event, noting that while the look was magnificent atop her sweeping hair, it certainly drew a reaction from the monarch.

It was noted that Queen Elizabeth was not amused by the scene-stealing moment. Instead of focusing on the monarch’s address, the headlines turned overwhelmingly toward Diana’s new hairstyle. Following this, Diana was reportedly told to adopt a more demure approach to her styling at future events attended by the Royal family.
